In 1992, when the Olympics and the Expo at last presented Spain as an emerging new democracy, Spanish liberal government pushed for an accelerated process of de-industrialisation in the name of a supposed economical progress, leaving the working class in distraught and the trade unions left behind. Sounds familiar?

El Año del Descubrimiento provocatively blends past and present, portraying Spain after the deindustrialization of the 1980s and after the 2008 global financial crisis through the eyes of working-class people in bars and cafes in the southern city of Cartagena.

The Year of the Discovery Recovers a Piece of Spanish History with a Formally Audacious
Perspective (The Film Stage)

A film that sponge up some of the anxieties of the day – from Brexit to the rise of the alt-right, from the
fate of trade unions to that of the EU (Senses of Cinema)
